Editorial: From interns to influencers, internship tales worth telling

Written by Toyosi Adebusuyi

As part of our commitment to telling stories that are inspired by people who are changing narratives in the tech ecosystem, we wrote a story that spotlights the experiences and contributions of interns in the workforce of many organizations.

This story discusses the significance of internships in propelling careers forward, particularly in the context of Nigerian startups. It brings to light, the essence and impact of tech internships through the remarkable stories of individuals like Olabinjo Adeniran, Oyinyechi Nneji, Jesimiel Williams, Ajiri Omafokpe and many others who started as interns and have now risen to thrive in their careers.

The story also emphasizes how internships can be a valuable tool for individuals transitioning into new professional paths, providing them with clarity and experience to navigate new industries or job roles. The story also addresses challenges associated with internships, such as the lack of structure, unpaid or low-paid internships, and inadequate mentorship. It emphasizes the need for clear guidelines, proper compensation, and robust mentorship programs to enhance the internship experience.

Additionally, the talks about the mutual benefits for both interns and organizations - interns get experience while organizations get fresh perspectives, talent pipeline and support on projects. The role of managers in providing guidance and feedback to help interns grow is highlighted in the story.

We are thankful to the editorial team at TechCabal, for resonating with this story and featuring it as a two-part series in the Entering Tech newsletter publication. We appreciate every contributor who shared their experiences with us.
